Getting Started on Superior: The Weekend Getaway

Our best Lake Superior sea kayaking adventure for beginners, families and travelers with limited vacation time is the Weekend Getaway. The fun begins on Friday afternoon with a half-day of sea kayak instruction at Naturally Superior Adventures’ base on the sheltered Michipicoten River. You’ll spend the night camped on our quiet riverside campground or splurge for a lakeside room in Rock Island Lodge. The next day, we prepare overnight gear and paddle on Lake Superior.

Our favourite weekend trip is the 25-kilometre section from Lake Superior Provincial Park’s Old Woman Bay to the Michipicoten River. The coastline here is rugged yet novice-friendly with plenty of landing options for sea kayakers. It’s entirely undeveloped and feels as remote as anywhere on the Big Lake. You’ll experience towering 600-foot cliffs at Old Woman Bay, trace the intimate, channels of Brule Harbour and round the stalwart promontory of Beauvier Point. Depending on the weather, we’ll set up camp on the crescent-shaped cobblestone beach at Smoky Point or tucked inside the sheltered confines of Brule Harbour.

This trip is fully guided and outfitted, meaning all you need to bring is a change of outdoors clothing, your sleeping bag and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. Your trained naturalist guide ensures your safety on and off the water and prepares homemade wilderness cuisine. We can also design a Custom Weekend Getaway that’s even more family friendly with stable and efficient tandem sea kayaks, shorter travel days and more rest stops.

Make this the year you get a taste of Lake Superior. In one magical weekend you’ll fall in love with the Inland Sea.
