Sea Kayak Basic Instruction

You can choose between a half- or full-day sea kayak instruction.  This course is designed to introduce the novice or inexperienced person to kayak paddling. In the half-day course you will learn the basic strokes and safety procedures before spending the afternoon exploring the area on your own. The full-day course is best for those looking for more thorough sea kayak instruction.

Your day starts with an introduction to kayak equipment, coast guard regulations and how to fit your boat.  One of the first skills you will learn is called the wet exit which is the number one safety exercise needed to continue with kayaking.  This helps build your confidence so that you will be prepared should an unexpected capsize occur.

The next group of skills you will learn include your paddling strokes; how to go forward, how to turn and how to stop.  After you have mastered the art of moving yourself, you will learn the art of tilts and leans and how to brace your boat.  This skill is key to preventing the capsize you learned earlier in the day.  Finally you will get an introduction to some more advanced strokes such as the draw, sculling draw and stern rudder.

We'll then take some time to go for a paddle so you can master your newly learned skills.

Naturally Superior Adventures’ Sea Kayak Basics provides you with confidence and a good foundation of safety and skills upon which to build. You’ll learn in sheltered water at our spectacular Lake Superior Paddling Centre. Both options include lunch.
